About the Instructor
Mestre Cabello
Born in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, Mestre Cabello has dedicated his life to the rhythms, instruments, songs, and dances of Afro-Brazilian culture. A disciple of the great Mestre João Grande, ethnomusicologist Professora Emilia Biancardi, and master drummer Jorge Alabé, he has been practicing Capoeira since the 1980s and teaching around the world since 1990.
Mestre Cabello currently leads the Barracão d'Angola Cultural Center in Serra Grande, Bahia, Brazil, where he works to preserve and transmit Brazilian culture through education, performance, and community practice. He brings a rigorous and attentive approach to the codes and rich repository of musicality, tuning, ritual, and movement left by the masters of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s — drawing on audio recordings, texts, photos, and drawings as living resources for contemporary practice.
For Mestre Cabello, the study of Afro-Brazilian culture is essential to the development of a complete capoeirista — and Capoeira Angola, a sustainable and nourishing practice for body, mind, and community.
